According to International Coffee Organization (ICO), 1.4 billion cup of coffee is drunk
worldwide. Around 40 percent of the given amount is utilized by Americans. Indeed,
after water, Coffee is the most favorable beverage in the world. Arabica Coffee is a plant
native to Ethiopia and dates back to 850 CE. It was discovered by a goat herder while
the goats were eating leaves and red berries from the bushes, he had never before
seen. They were dancing about wildly and kept alert during night.
During the past years, since it was understood that coffee could have similar effects on
human beings, the plant has played an important role for human beings. Similarly,
human beings have benefited the plant to a great extent. We have designated more
than 11million acres of new habitat all over the world to its cultivation, 25 million farmers
were allocated to preserve and nurture that, and enhanced its value to the extent which
made it one of the invaluable most commercial goods/ global commodity worldwide .it is
a worthy trade for a bush which is neither edible nor beautiful and doesn’t have an easy
cultivation.
If you have already got familiar with the magical world of coffee, the fundamentals,
industry and its art are significant aspects of the investigation of its wonders. Article
Series on “Coffee Basics for the Apprentice” can elucidate your view on the new world.

Familiarity with Coffee Plant, Fruit and its cultivation

The artificial cultivation of coffee is possible all over the world; however, the natural
process is mostly done in African countries such as Ethiopia and Yemen, South American countries such
as Brazil and Colombia, and Asian countries like Vietnam, Indonesia and India. these countries are
located in the coffee belt. The coffee belt refers to the equatorial regions of the earth where coffee
is most easily grown.

Cultivation of Coffee

The cultivation of coffee is mostly similar to the cultivation of pistachio. The seeds are
planted by ten meters’ distance from each other which requires enormous farms. It
takes around 7 to 10 years to grow the bush. It seems evident that the cultivation of
coffee is risky, exhausting and expensive.

The Most Common Species of Coffee

In effect, coffee beans have been divided into 4 types, Arabica, Robusta, Liberica and
Excelsa. They vary according to the different species types of tree, bush,
appearance, and the fruit. After years these species were abated into two types:
Arabica and Robusta. Although, these two types have around 125 subspecies, only ten
of them are being cultivated and utilized these days.
According to the genetic absorption of coffee plant from the soil, coffee has different
taste profiles. For instance, the coffee from Ethiopia has the taste profile like fruits.
In some cases, they smell like blueberry or strawberry. In contrast, Brazilian coffee has
taste profile like nuts and chocolate. Colombian coffee taste like apricot, nectarine and
other stone fruits. Indeed, the western part of coffee cultivation belt in the world is propitious
for cultivating Arabica and the eastern hemisphere is appropriate for cultivating
Robusta. Ref:CoffeeForLess.com

The coffee fruit is a species of cherry whose color continuum range from green, yellow,
orange, red and purple. The best time for the cultivation of coffee is the time when the
fruit is red, sweet and edible. Ref:PerfectDailyGrind.com

Coffee Beans

The outer skin of coffee is called exocarp. under the skin, there is a pulp which is called
mesocarp. The inner layer of the pulp is mucilage. There is also a layer of pectin
underneath the mucilage. These layers are full of sugars which are significant during the
fermentation process. Then we reach the coffee seeds which are technically called
endosperm. And they are generally known as beans. Each pair of beans in each coffee
cherry is covered by a narrow layer which is called parchment (endocarp).

The Bean Identity

Did you know that coffee is actually part of a family of flowering plants called
Rubiaceae? Within this family, you will find over five hundred Genera (the biological
group that a family is divided into) and about six thousand species. One of these is the
bean we love, coffee (Coffea in scientific terms)! Although botanists consider all seed-
bearing plants in the Rubiaceae family as coffee plants, the coffees we drink fall mainly
within just two species- Arabica and Canephora, also known as Robusta .This brings us
to the difference between Arabica beans vs Robusta beans.
